Group Project One - 07 - Room Preview

Started fiddling with the photos at 11:00am, It's now 3:00pm and I've almost got them how I want them to look. I researched the best options to select for this type of panorama using the photomerge tool in photoshop, and then used warp to straighten it out. Once I'd done that I cropped it into a rectangle and played with the colours and refined the warp.

Here's a preview of what it looks like so far.

My total hours are now at 13.

Group Project One - 06 - Room Photos

We planned our room shoot today from 9:00 until 9:30, then made our way to Kyle's house and setup the tripod we borrowed and my camera in his study.

Kyle sorted out the room, moving family photos out and making everything look appropriate, as well as finding items to fit in with our list to place throughout the area. I took 95 shots of the room, making six 360 degree passes so we can make a large panorama of the room. This took about an hour and a half, bringing my total hours to 9.

Now I'm about to begin putting the images together in Photoshop.

Once Luke has got his production photos off his camera I'll upload some here.

EDIT: The images are ready! Here's three of them.

The plan for today is to get our room images shot, and then start putting them together and making sure everything fits neatly.

Group Project One - 04 - Proposal

Here is my version of the project proposal.

Here are a couple of links to some existing 360 interactives, they appear to have been created using a 360 camera but the feel is similar to what we intend with our project.

Group Project One - 02

This morning I began investigating what options were available for us to achieve a 360 degree shot for our interactive room.

The two options I've come up with are either, seaming lots of shots taken from a tripod in the center of a room into one image, or hiring a 360 degree camera for a few days. Since this isn't a payed job I decided that taking shots and seaming them together works better for us since it saves money.

Once I made this decision, I setup a camera and tripod in the classroom and took some test shots, moving the camera about 30 degrees each time I saved an image to make a full circle. Once I had the images I researched how to best seam them together using Photoshop. I discovered that there is an easy to use tool for this purpose called Photomerge inside Photoshop. I used this tool on the folder of images I had taken and left the computer to compute for a while, when I returned it was finishing up and the results were wonderful. This method will work just fine for our project.

I spent about 190 minutes on what I've described above, along with discussing some details with my team mates. Bringing my total time up to 400 minutes (7 hours).

The details discussed involved what will happen while exploring the interactive, so far we've determined that we want the scene to begin with 12 items related to sustainability throughout the interactive. At first they are in a state that is least sustainable, when the user hovers over the object, it will be highlighted, or perhaps the interactive will zoom in on the item. When it is clicked, it will turn into it's most sustainable state, and text and/or audio will appear to explain the difference between the states and why it's important to have it in it's sustainable state.

Another detail we've decided on, is to have the interactive work on multiple platforms (Desktop, Smart Phone and iPad). The means to do this will need to be investigated.

Our target audience is regular people who don't realise how much they can do in their own homes to improve their sustainability. This influenced our decision to make the interactive for multiple platforms. I would like for it to be available for free in app stores so people try it and pay attention.

Here's a digital version of our brainstorming last week to figure out what kind of project we could do.

Group Project One - 01

Today we began preparing for our first assignment of the semester. A group project with the theme 'Sustainability'.

When I heard that we should think about who we pick to be members of our work group, I started thinking about what skills the people around me have, and which skills I lack. I decided to group with Luke and Kyle since they have a better understanding of creating interactive outcomes than I do. On top of this reason, I like the work I've seen Luke do and wanted to take this opportunity to work with him, and I already know I work well with Kyle as we've worked together on previous assignments.

We brainstormed for roughly 90 minutes until we came to the idea of creating a 360 degree room in an interactive, where the user can scroll about the room from a position in the middle. We then expanded on this idea for roughly 120 minutes.

The goal of the interactive from the users perspective is to figure out what in the room could be improved to be more sustainable, this is accomplished by clicking items as you explore. When you find something that can be improved, it will change the graphic and bring up a bit of text explaining what has happened and why. We're playing with the idea of adding a limit to the number of clicks the user gets, so that they don't click everything madly until they complete the interactive.

The amount of events remaining to be discovered will only be revealed once all the clicks have been used up. And then the interactive will reset, providing incentive to think about what is being shown and letting that knowledge sink in better.

And here is the current Timeline for the project.
