Group Project One - 13

During the break, our group discussed our project online, working further on the name, research, code and ui. Luke suggested a few names, two of which I liked. My first preference 'GreenChange' was already taken a few times (I searched the name to see if it was in use) so I thought it'd be best to use CleverGreen instead. I still like 'You're Wrong', but I understand using CleverGreen instead.

I prepared the object images for the interactive and sent them to Kyle through our dropbox public folder for the project. He had a bit of difficulty getting the project to open at the library so some of the work had to wait until class resumed today. He has all of the objects ready now and the interactive is starting to look quite nice. He plans on making some transitions between the main screen and when the information appears whenever an object is selected, I'm looking forward to seeing that in action.

The document I found earlier proved very useful, giving us a lot of the information we were missing for each object, Luke and I went through it and picked out the pieces that we could use today.

Luke also made an icon for CleverGreen just now, I suggested basing it around the word clever and making it green, at the moment it's a brain with green outlines. It looks good.

I mentioned in an earlier post that we were planning on talking to a sustainability representative, that didn't occur due to my absence on the day we planned to do that. So we're going to try again tomorrow, hopefully that goes well. I'd like them to check our information and make sure we have everything correct, and perhaps add some extra bits if we missed anything.

I'm still hoping to find the PDF I mentioned in my last post, It has a lot of information on the cost of the items we're using, and that would save a lot of time for us.

I'm currently reading this PDF for information on the cost of energy.

There's a better pdf that I'd like to use, I'm trying to locate it as well.

Group Project One - 11

We've spent the afternoon working on the flash prototype, and discussing what we want the U.I to look like. It's quite simple now with only a few elements and I think it's looking okay, but I'll remain skeptical until I see what it looks like with the interactive working.

Next, I'd like Kyle to get the image to pan up and down. Luke is going to continue work on the U.I as well as investigating remaking the interactive in CSS. And I'm working on making the object buttons.

Tomorrow we're going to ask some people from the sustainability department if they'd be happy to talk to us about our solutions for some of the issues we've found.

Total Hours: 24

Group Project One - 10

I grabbed the work Luke had done for researching our Interactive Objects today, and I continued it. I've outlined the needs, issues and problems for all the items, and half of the solutions. I need to do some more research before I can finish the last solutions.

Here is an image outlining the items that will be interactive.

I also helped Kyle get the flash scrolling to work properly, by moving the image center into the middle of the canvas rather than the upper left corner.

Luke's been working on the U.I for our project, so far it's looking pretty good but I feel like it may be getting over complicated. When he's finished we'll go over it and pick what works and what can be sacrificed for simplicity.

Group Project One - 09 - The Name

This morning we decided it was time to pick a name for our project.

At first we wanted to head towards ideas like 'Save Money' and 'Go Green'. But after some research we realized those have been overused way too much and our project wouldn't stand out if we followed that paradigm.

So we started considering what could catch someones attention, make them want to see what's goin' down in this part of town. And we decided to name it, 'You're Wrong'.

My theory is, upon seeing the title, you would want to investigate and try and disprove the claim of 'You're Wrong'. If they really are wrong in their misconceptions, then hopefully they'll take something from the application. And if they do know all the information already, then they're not our target audience, but they might show the app to their friends under the attitude of "I bet you didn't/don't know what I know/knew."

Once we have a prototype, I'd like to test my theory on some people and see how they actually react.

Group Project One - 08

Today we started working on the interface for our project. After playing around with the idea of having the view pan around in flash, we decided to do the opposite and have the image and buttons pan around the view, as this seems to be the easier option from what we can gather.

Currently our method to do this involves invisible handlers at the edge of the view, that when moused over trigger the background image to move the opposite way to the side the button is on. This process is working, the next step is to figure out how to have the movement constant while moused over the handler, as well as tweak the speed of the movement depending on the proximity of the mouse to the edge.

We also presented our idea to the class today, this helped me to refine exactly what are aims are, such as only using misconceptions on sustainability. An idea I had veered away from gradually since the beginning, but the one that I really wanted to pursue, as I think it can be a useful contribution to society. Researching these misconceptions is my next step.

Today I spent about 5 hours on the project, bringing my total hours to 18.
